RATES:
Our rates are based upon costs of outfitting a group
and a modest profit. For example, it costs us almost
as much in labor and services to outfit a group for
three days as it does for six. It costs us more per
person to outfit a group of two people than a group
of six and our rates reflect this. Also, in advertising,
it costs us less to promote our trips to "Past
Customers" than it does to new customers who have
not been here previously. In other words, it costs us
less to stir our "Past Customer Wilderness Canoe
Trail Fever" than it does to stir a new customer's
fever. Our rates reflect all of these factors.

CANOEING – CAMPING – FISHING IN THE BOUNDARY
WATERS – QUETICO WILDERNESS
EQUIPMENT FOR CANOE TRIP PLANNING

| GRUMMAN LIVERY LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINUM CANOES
AT 68 POUNDS
We supply only canoes that are custom built for the
canoe trip outfitting business by Grumman...safe
and durable...Made with a built-in canoe-length keel
to help keep the canoe from drifting sideways
across
the lake in a crosswind...Made with styrofoam-filled
floatation compartments at both ends to keep the
canoe
afloat even when filled with water and gear. Our 17-foot
livery lightweight Grumman canoes will
carry
three average-sized people, plus their food and gear,
with free board to spare. Most groups prefer to
travel
two people to a canoe instead. Our canoes have an extra
light skin for ease in carrying, but at the same
time
five ribs to provide stability even with the heaviest
loads in rough water. They are built for Cliff
Wold's.
They cost more, but for safety, comfort, ease in paddling
and portaging, and the prestige of paddling the
best
canoe, they are worth it! All canoes come with nylon-covered
foam-padded carrying yokes for portaging. A third
seat
is available upon request. You have a choice of plastic
and aluminum paddles or wood paddles available
in varying
lengths. Life jackets, required by law, are provided
for each person. We also have available Kevlar
canoes, 46 pounds, at extra cost.
ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT TENTS We supply three different
sizes of custom-made ultra lightweight Eureka Catskill
nylon tents. These tents are also specially made for
Cliff Wold's. We have 2- to 3-man tents, 3- to 4-man
tents and 5- to 6-man tents from which to choose for
your group's needs. All tents have floors, mosquito
bars, and are maintained clean and odor-free by a well-trained
staff. You will enjoy the ease with which they are pitched
and struck. And if you have pole problems out on the
Canoe Trails, miles from the canoe landing, yes, paddles
will substitute for the poles!
ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT PACKSACKS We supply rugged,
durable, ultra lightweight nylon packsacks for your
sleeping gear and your personal items brought from home.
They are reinforced with canvas at stress points and
are provided with foam-back straps for ease in portaging.
The packs take the punishment of the Canoe Trails. They
were designed in Ely and made in Ely for exclusive use
in Cliff Wold's canoe trip outfitting.
ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT LAUNDERED SLEEPING BAGS We
supply Slumberjack ultra lightweight nylon sleeping
bags with Hollofil II stuffing, and also the cotton-covered
Hollofil for those who prefer cotton to nylon. With
the exception of the bags we have purchased the last
two years, bags of the same type can be zipped together
to make double sleeping bags. These are ideal for couples
or families with small children. Each sleeping bag is
freshly laundered and re-fluffed each time it returns
from a trip. Each nylon bag has a stuff sack, while
cotton-covered bags are rolled. You will like either
type. We have extra-long bags for persons six-feet-five
to seven feet.
ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT COOK KITS Our ultra lightweight
cook kits are selected on the basis of your group size...a
group of two or three people does not receive a cook
kit designed for four to six people or one designed
for a group of seven to nine. Each cook kit has three
kettles, two fry pans, and a coffee pot. A plastic water
jug is sent along for storing water. Each cook kit includes
the chef's utensils: fillet knife with sheath, large
spoon, slotted spoon, spatula, whisk, fry pan handles,
large fork, and ladle. The cook kit also contains: a
cup, plate, spoon, fork, and knife for each person in
the group, plus one extra of each. The chef's utensils,
plates, cups, and eating utensils are packed in separate
nylon bags designed to be tied around and hung from
trees for easy access and cleanliness.
CAMP TOOLS Our camp tools consist of a lightweight
nylon tarp to cover any open packs or gear, a genuine
bow saw with a sharp blade with which you may definitely
cut that firewood, a splitting ax, a shovel (if desired),
and a fire grate if going to Canada. Sheaths are supplied
for the axes and saws.
CAMPGROUND, BUNKROOM, SAUNA BATH, AND SHOWER FACILITIES
Our campground-bunkroom facility is located just four
miles from Ely with easy access to any Ely facilities
you may need to visit before or after your trip: clothing
stores, restaurants, drug stores, theater, medical services,
auto repair, etc. Our campgrounds have both privy and
modern bathroom facilities, sauna bath and shower facilities,
open-fire cooking facilities and campsites to pitch
our tents, if you wish, the night before or after your
canoe trip, bunkroom facilities which accommodate two
to ten people, and both overnight and long-term parking.
Our bunkroom-campground overnight facilities were designed
for youth groups, but many adult groups use the facilities,
too. If you prefer motel accommodations, we can send
you a list of Ely motels and their phone numbers.
HELPFUL INSTRUCTION We route groups by pointing
out points of interest along the route, noting the better
campsites and fishing spots, showing them how to paddle
a canoe properly (it does not take long to learn to
paddle a canoe and make it go straight), and explaining
how to load a canoe for paddling into the wind and with
the wind. We explain what to do if an emergency occurs
on a lake. We also give instructions on erecting our
tents and tips on preparing our food. We go through
all your food and equipment with you before you leave
on your trip so you know what you have and where you
can find it. We haul all the food and equipment to and
from the landings of your choice. And, after your trip,
sauna baths and showers are available at the campgrounds.
Bunkrooms are also available for overnight lodging for
the night before and/or the night after your trip if
desired.
24-HOUR EMERGENCY SERVICE Cliff Wold's has an
emergency service available day and night. Should groups
have an emergency on the Canoe Trails and need help
after closing hours, we have service available at our
campgrounds to take care of any needs. Should there
be an emergency at home such as a life threatening illness
or a death in the immediate family of a group member,
our staff will do their best within the limits placed
upon them by the U.S. Forest Service, to get the person
concerned out of the wilderness and on his way home
as quickly as possible.
OTHER SERVICES Cliff Wold's has many different
types of Canoe Trips: trucking all group members, food
and equipment to distant departure points such as the Gunflint Trail, the Sawbill
Landing, etc., with the group paddling back to a landing
in the Ely area; arranging a fly-in and paddle-back
trip; and, the most common trip, sending a group on
a circular route, in which they leave from one landing
and return to another. Towboat service is available
to Prairie Portage and to campsites on Basswood Lake
where motors are allowed. Groups may erect their fishing
camp on Basswood Lake and fish for a few days.
PARKING FOR VEHICLES WHILE ON THE TRIP At the
public parking lots at landings off the Fernberg Road
and Echo Trail, vehicles have been broken into, had
tires and batteries stolen, etc. For our customers'
peace of mind and worry-free Canoe Trip, we prefer that,
if you have a late model car, you leave it in our parking
lots. We also appreciate you leaving your wallets, jewelry,
and other valuable items with us. We seal your valuables
in a bag and place them in our safe for the duration
of your trip. Our rates include transportation of food,
equipment and group members to and from any landing
within 22 miles of Ely when only one van is required.
Our vans, when equipped with trailers, will haul up
to 10 people plus food and equipment...there is an additional
charge when a second van is required. Also there is
an additional charge for hauling to and from landings
beyond the 22-mile limit, such as landings off the Echo
Trail.
CLIFF WOLD'S CANOE TRIP OUTFITTING CO. INC.,
1731 EAST SHERIDAN STREET, ELY, MN 55731 is
one of the oldest Canoe Trip outfitting companies under
the same ownership and management in the Ely area. Cliff
Wold's is our trade name. We started outfitting Canoe
trips in 1961 with six canoes, six tents, 24 packsacks,
24 paddles, 24 sleeping bags, six cook kits, six axes,
saws, shovels, and tarps, and other miscellaneous items,
plus a 1957 Ford station wagon and a canoe trailer to
haul the canoes, food and equipment for customers to
various departure landings...Not such a great start,
but by 1972 Cliff Wold's had grown to be one of the
largest and leading outfitters (outfitting more than
3,800 people in 1972 complete with food and equipment)
in the Ely area, and is still one of the largest–if
not the largest–complete outfitting companies
in the area. But we're not too large to give you the
personal service and attention that you will need for
a successful Canoe Trip experience...
With Cliff Wold's, we try to make it a point for "The
Boss" to meet each group before their trip and
again after the trip. And, if our food, equipment, and
services have not been as we said they would be, Cliff
Wold himself expects to hear about it...We cannot control
the weather, nor the fishing, although the fishing can
be excellent. But we can control the food, the equipment,
and services you receive, and we expect these to be
the best that you can find on the Canoe Trails, where
good outfitting really counts... Cliff Wold's
is strictly a Canoe Trip Outfitting Company.
We do not operate a resort, gift shop, restaurant, bait
shop, gas station, tow service, motel, or any other
business with outfitting as a sideline. As specialists
in the outfitting business, we leave those services
to specialists in those fields... Quality Control
is the key to our success!
